An API response arrives as one long line, a config file won’t load, or a webhook payload is nested six levels deep. Most people then paste the JSON into the first online formatter they find, which may be full of ads or may quietly log what you paste.
We built a cleaner option: a free JSON formatter and validator that runs entirely in your browser. It beautifies, minifies, and validates JSON instantly, and when something is wrong it tells you exactly where. There’s no sign-up.
What Is the Webbit JSON Formatter?
It’s a free developer tool that takes raw or messy JSON and makes it readable, compact, or verified. Valid JSON is formatted automatically as you type, with keys, strings, numbers, booleans, and nulls colour-coded so you can scan the structure at a glance.
There’s no account and no limit on how much JSON you can format.
Format, Minify, or Validate
- Format (beautify) — adds line breaks and indentation so nested objects and arrays are easy to follow. Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs.
- Minify — strips out all unnecessary whitespace to give the smallest possible output, which is useful for production APIs, config files, and payloads where size matters.
- Validate — checks whether the JSON is valid without changing it.
Find Errors Instantly: Exact Line and Column
Error messages like “Unexpected token” don’t help much in a 500-line file. When your JSON is invalid, this tool shows the line and column where parsing failed and highlights that spot in the input box. You can go straight to the missing comma, the extra bracket, or the unquoted key instead of searching the whole file for it.
Sort Keys & Auto-Format
- Sort Keys Alphabetically — sorts every object’s keys A–Z, including nested objects. This makes two JSON files much easier to compare, or a config file easier to review.
- Auto-Format While Typing — the output updates as you edit. Turn it off if you’d rather format on demand.
See the Shape of Your Data
A JSON Overview panel shows the size of your JSON, the total number of keys, and the maximum nesting depth. It’s a quick way to see how complex a payload is before you work with it.
Paste It, Upload It, or Load an Example
Paste JSON straight into the input box, upload a .json or .txt file from your device, or click Load Example to see how it works. When you’re done, copy the output or download it as a .json file.
Everything Happens in Your Browser
API responses often contain customer records, tokens, or internal data that shouldn’t be sent to an unknown server. With this tool, every format, minify, and validation check runs locally in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored.
Practical Uses for Developers & Teams
- Web developers — read API responses, debug REST and webhook payloads, and tidy configuration files.
- WordPress & WooCommerce developers — inspect REST API output, plugin settings exports, and payment gateway callbacks.
- SEO teams — check JSON-LD structured data for syntax errors before it goes live. (To create the markup in the first place, try our free schema markup generator.)
- QA and support — make log output and error payloads readable when reporting a bug.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it free to use?
Yes. There’s no sign-up and no limit on how much JSON you can format.
Does it upload or store my JSON?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your data is never uploaded to a server or stored anywhere.
What’s the difference between Format and Minify?
Format adds indentation and line breaks so the JSON is easy to read. Minify removes all unnecessary whitespace so the JSON is as small as possible.
How do I find the error in my JSON?
If your JSON is invalid, the tool shows the exact line and column where parsing failed and highlights that spot in the input box.
